Building Confidence, Leadership & Community

Game Changers:
Sports for Development

In a remote settlement on the outskirts of a national forest, children grow up with limited access to structured learning, recreation, or safe spaces to play. Barriers such as low literacy, minimal healthcare access, gendered restrictions, and a lack of opportunities often leave young people, especially girls, without avenues to discover their strengths or build their aspirations. This project uses sports as a powerful tool for development, helping children build discipline, teamwork, emotional regulation, and leadership skills. Through structured training, mentorship, and community-based activities, the program opens pathways for young girls and boys to grow in confidence and step into roles that were previously inaccessible to them.

How the Program Grew

The work began by addressing everyday challenges, unoccupied youth, gender segregation, the absence of play spaces, and limited exposure beyond the settlement. A dedicated facilitator was appointed to build trust, encourage participation, and create a consistent routine around play.

Participation grew steadily. Children began showing up early, staying engaged, and motivating one another. Parents slowly started recognising that impact, discipline, teamwork, and responsibility became visible at home and in school.

A key milestone came when a small group of girls joined a national leadership and coaching initiative centred around Ultimate Frisbee. After completing residential training and earning the title of Coaches in Training (CITs), they began mentoring younger children, demonstrating what confidence, community leadership, and possibility can look like.

From Challenge to Change

  • Regular training sessions that build technical sports skills, focus, and collaboration.

  • Exposure visits to tournaments, where they meet athletes, watch competitive play, and imagine futures beyond familiar boundaries.

  • Mentorship from young women who have trained as coaches and now lead sessions with empathy and authority.

  • Health and academic support, including weekly classes, digital learning, and monthly health clinics that ensure continuity of well-being.

  • Community bonding, where children from different groups play, learn, and solve problems together, breaking long-standing social barriers.

From Learners to Leaders: GameChangers

A transformative step was taken by enrolling four young girls into the GameChangers Program, an initiative by Ultimate Peace and India Ultimate, the program uses Ultimate Frisbee to build leadership and coaching skills. The girls began their journey with a one-week residential camp in Chennai, receiving intensive training in coaching, leadership, and team-building. By the end, they earned the title of Coaches in Training (CITs), symbolizing their readiness to inspire and lead. The program features workshops on advanced coaching techniques, leadership development for confidence-building, and community sports sessions to foster gender equity. The girls embraced these opportunities wholeheartedly and will now return as agents of change, leading sports sessions and becoming role models for others.

The Road Ahead

The upcoming phases of the project aim to:

  • Train a full community team for regional competitions. Certify more girls as coaches, building a self-sustaining model where each cohort trains the next.

  • Strengthen health and academic support alongside sports sessions.

  • Expand participation and create mixed-gender, mixed-group collaboration that fosters unity and confidence.

By combining sports, mentorship, and holistic support, the project helps children discover who they can become: leaders, teammates, and changemakers, and ensures that every new cohort grows in the footsteps of the one before.
